In audio electronics good and clear headphone sound is important.
This article shows one simple way to make Headphone Amplifier Circuit using IC LM4880.
This chip is made special for headphone uses.
IC LM4880 is with low noise, low distortion and gives good sound with little power.
It works with 2.7V to 5V and so it is good for battery use.
This IC gives clean and strong sound to headphones.
It has many good features so it is good for small and simple audio designs.
Circuit Working:
Parts List:
Component Type | Specification | Quantity |
---|---|---|
Resistors | 20k 1/4 watt | 4 |
Capacitors | Ceramic 0.1μF | 1 |

Electrolytic 1μF 25V | 3 | |
Semiconductors | IC LM4880 | 1 |
Headphones | 2 |
In our simple headphone amplifier circuit IC LM4880 works with some passive parts to make sound strong and clear.
It gives 250 mW per channel to 8 ohm load.
It works with power from 2.7V to 5V DC.
Resistors R1 and R2 are feedback resistors.
Capacitors C4 and C5 block DC at input and C3 removes high frequency noise to keep sound clean.
Headphones connects to headphone1 and headphone2.
Audio signal comes in through audioInput1 and audioInput2.
Pin 5 is shutdown pin and if we connect it to ground then amplifier goes into low power mode and stops working.
This helps save battery in portable use.
For normal working pin 5 should be connected to power 2.7V to 5V.
Formulas:
Formulas for Headphone Amplifier Circuit:
1. Resistors:
Resistors used for bias, gain and circuit control.
Voltage Gain (Av):
Av = 1 + Rf / Rin
where,
- Rf is the feedback resistor
- Rin is the input resistor
This tells how much sound is increased.
2. Capacitors:
Capacitors used for signal passing and filtering.
Cutoff Frequency (fc):
fc = 1 / (2πRC)
where,
- R is the resistor
- C is the capacitor
This tells which signal frequency is allowed or blocked.
3. Resistor Power Dissipation:
Check how much power resistor uses.
Power (P):
P = I²R
where,
- I is the current
- R is the resistance
Use this to check resistor not overheated.
4. Capacitor Reactance:
Shows how capacitor blocks or passes signal.
Reactance (Xc):
Xc = 1 / (2πfC)
where,
- f is the signal frequency
- C is the capacitance
Lower Xc lets more signal pass.
These formulas help to design and understand headphone amplifier parts and working.
How to Build:
To build a Headphone Amplifier Circuit using IC LM4880 follow the below mentioned steps:
- First collect all parts as shown in circuit diagram.
- Pin 1 LM4880 connect to one side of headphone1 through capacitor C1 and other side of headphone connects to ground.
- Pin 2 connect to audioInput1 using resistor R3 and capacitor C4 and other side of input goes to ground.
- R1 connects between pin 1 and pin 2.
- Pin 3 connect to ground through capacitor C6.
- Pin 4 connect to ground.
- Pin 5 Shutdown pin can be used to turn IC off by connecting to ground and for normal work connect to +V.
- Pin 6 connect to pin 7 through resistor R2 and also connect to audioInput2 using resistor R4 and capacitor C5 and other side of input goes to ground.
- Pin 7 connect to one side of headphone2 through capacitor C2 and other side of headphone to ground.
- Pin 8 connect to +2.7V to 5V power supply.
- C3 connect from power supply pin 8 to ground which acts as filter.
Conclusion:
This is a small and simple Headphone Amplifier Circuit using IC LM4880
It gives good, clear sound using low power.
With right values for resistors and capacitors and using shutdown pin it works great for portable use.
