IC LM309 Based 5 Volt Power Supply Circuit

Last updated on 5 July 2026 by Admin-Lavi Leave a Comment

Today, many electronic circuits require a stable 5V DC supply; however, the AC mains voltage is much higher, so the circuit must reduce the voltage before converting it to DC.

Furthermore, voltage regulation is important, so this circuit uses a voltage regulator, also this article explains about simple IC LM309-based 5V power supply circuit.

Moreover, the circuit is reliable and is also easy to build, thus beginners can build it without any difficulty.

Circuit Working:

Parts List:

ComponentsValuesQuantity
CapacitorsElectrolytic 2200uF 25V2
Electrolytic 220uF 25V1
Ceramic 0.01uF1
SemiconductorsBridge Diode 1N54024
Voltage Regulator IC LM309 or IC LM78051
SPST On-Off Switch1
Fuse 0.5A1
Step Down Transformer 6.3V 2A1
DC Power Output 5V DC1

To begin with, in this article the circuit converts 220V AC into stable 5V DC.

At first, the AC supply enters the transformer, which reduces the voltage to 6.3V AC, then the low AC voltage passes through the bridge rectifier, which converts it into pulsating DC.

After that, capacitors C1 and C2 remove the ripples, producing a smoother DC voltage.

Now this DC voltage is fed to LM309 IC and this IC regulates the voltage and therefore, the output becomes constant 5 volts DC.

Finally, capacitors C3 and C4 remove the output noise, providing a clean and stable 5V DC output.

How to Build:

To build a IC LM309 Based 5 Volt Power Supply Circuit follow the below steps for connection:

  • First, collect all the parts of circuit as shown in circuit diagram.
  • Then connect transformer primary to input of 220V A and connect transformer secondary to bridge rectifier input.
  • Now connect rectifier output positive to C1 positive and negative of C1 to GND and connect rectifier output negative to ground.
  • Also, connect capacitor C2 positive from rectifier output positive and negative of capacitor C2 to GND.
  • After that, connect pin 1 of IC LM309 to bridge rectifier through capacitors C1 and C2
  • Further, connect pin 2 of IC LM309 to output of 5V DC through capacitors C3 and C4
  • Connect pin 3 ground of IC LM309 GND of the circuit.
  • Finally, take 5V output across output capacitor C3 and C4.

Conclusion:

To conclude, IC LM309 Based 5 Volt Power Supply Circuit is simple and efficient and it provides stable output which is easy to construct and is also suitable for beginners.

Therefore, this circuit is ideal for small electronic projects, and many power supply applications use it.
