The Chirping Bird Sound Simulator Circuit is based on two astable multivibrators with each serving a distinct role: one for determining the tone and the other for establishing the repetition rate.

The tone oscillator is responsible for setting the fundamental pitch of the birds chirping.

This oscillators tone changes every half cycle and its fundamental tone can be adjusted by manipulating the position of the variable arm of VR1 resistor.

Tone Oscillator Equation:

Tone (f) = 0.693 / (R1 + 2 * (R2 + VR1)) * C1

where:

  • f is the tone frequency
  • R1 is the resistance of the first resistor
  • R2 is the resistance of the second resistor
  • VR1 is the variable resistor
  • C1 is the capacitance

By using 2.2k resistors in the base circuit and a 10k variable resistor the tone is changed through a wide range.

The tone is modified by adjusting the tone oscillators collector base of coupling capacitors.

The frequency at which the chirping sound is repeated is controlled by the repetition rate oscillator.

The collector base coupling capacitors is adjusted to change this rate.

Repetition Rate Equation:

Repetition Rate (R) = 0.693 / (R3 + R4) * C2

where:

  • R3 is the resistance of the third resistor
  • R4 is the resistance of the fourth resistor
  • C2 is the capacitance

A 10uF capacitor connected from the variable point of the potentiometer to the ground serves to shape the square wave generated by the rate oscillator ensuring smooth operation.

To produce the characteristic warbling effect of a birds chirping an additional capacitor is introduced.

This capacitor smoothens the square wave and the duration of the sounds decay is influenced by the capacitors value and the circuits output.

The supply voltage also has an impact on the tone but this can be recalibrated by adjusting the variable resistor.

The circuit maintains smooth operation across a wide range of supply voltages.

To eliminate undesirable harmonics a capacitor is placed across the primary winding of the transformer.
