Simple 555 Timer Based Time Sense Tester Circuit

The Simple 555 Timer Based Time Sense Tester Circuit is a cool and easy electronic project that helps you test how well you can tell time.

It uses a special chip called the IC 555 timer set up in a way that allows it to create a specific time delay.

To start the timer you press a switch and then you try to guess when a certain amount of time has passed before you press another switch to stop it.

An LED light shows you the result.

You can power supply the circuit with a 9V battery.

When switch S1 is turned on the capacitor C1 starts charging through the resistors R1 and R2.

This action makes the 555 timer work in monostable mode causing the output at pin 3 to go HIGH.

As a result, the LED1 lights up showing that the timing is in progress.

The capacitor C1 keeps charging until it reaches two-thirds of the supply voltage at which point the timer resets itself automatically.

After the reset the output at pin 3 goes back to LOW turning off the LED1.

Now, the user needs to press switch S2 to stop the timer manually, so they can compare their estimated time with the actual time that has passed.

The monostable mode time delay formula for the 555 timer is given by:

T = 1.1 × R1 × C1

Substituting the component values:

T = 1.1 × (2.2M + 100k) × 1µF

T = 1.1 × 2.3M × 1µF

T = 2.53 seconds

Thus, the LED will stay ON for approximately 2.53 seconds before turning OFF automatically.

How to Build:

To build a Simple 555 Timer Based Time Sense Tester Circuit follow the below steps for connections:

  • Assemble all the components as mentioned in the above circuit diagram
  • Connect pin 1 of IC1 555 to GND
  • Connect pin 2 of IC1 555 with pin 6
  • Connect pin 3 of IC1 555 to positive supply with LED1 and resistor R3
  • Connect pin 4 and pin 8 of IC1 555 with positive supply
  • Connect pin 1 of IC1 555 to GND
  • Connect resistor R2 and S1 switch between pin 2 and pin 7 of IC1
  • Connect resistor R1 between pin 7 and positive supply
  • Connect pin 5 of IC1 555 to GND through capacitor C2
  • Connect positive capacitor C1 to pin 2 and negative of capacitor to GND
  • Connect S2 switch to positive of 9V battery and negative of battery to GND
