This guide shows how to build a Simple Flashing Beacon Light Circuit which does requires few parts like:
Timer tells the light when to turn ON and OFF quickly, so it looks like blinking; also, people use this circuit for decoration, warning light or just for fun.
Circuit Working:

Parts List:
| Components | Quantity |
|---|---|

| 10k 0.5W | 3 |

| Electrolytic 10µF 35V | 3 |
| Semiconductors | |
| IC LM317 | 1 |
| ON/OFF Switch | 1 |
| 12V Incandescent Bulb | 1 |
To begin with, first check resistor power rating proper, so resistor can handle expected power dissipation and not become too hot or get damage.
Here, flashing beacon light circuit give many useful use, like distress signal on highway or direction guide in different places like parking area, hospitals and hotels.
In this presentation, we also introduce flashing beacon design using well known LM317 regulator IC.
LM317 regulator can give more than 1 ampere and powers a small good quality 12V, 10W bulb with effective reflector for clear and easy visibility.
For operation, connect 12 to 15V, 1 ampere DC power supply to IC input pin and also fix aluminum heat sink to IC for controlling heat when giving maximum current.
With given resistor and capacitor values, bulb flashes around 4 times per second and flashing speed depends on capacitor charge and discharge time.
Hence, by changing resistor and capacitor values, we can adjust flashing beacon flash speed for different requirements..
Formulas:
While making circuit for flashing beacon light one needs to connect light like 12V bulb, so it turn ON and OFF again and again in regular time.
One can make simple flashing beacon using parts from circuit diagram before and LM317 voltage regulator chip and here is formula we need for making circuit:
Timing Period Calculation:
Time for light to turn ON and OFF (called period T) depends on RC time constant and resistor and capacitor together with LM317 decide this timing.
We can imagine or calculate the time period T for blinking using this simple formula for astable circuit with LM317:
T = 1.1 × R × C
where,
To make light blink how we want, choose voltage for lamp (VL) and capacitor voltage (VC).
Example: we want bulb blink every 2 seconds.
Lets say we use capacitor C = 10µF (that is 0.00001 F)
Then use formula:
R = T / 1.1 × C = 2 / 1.1 × 0.00001 = 18.18k
To make close to that, we can join three 10k resistors in series and if want more accurate blink time, change resistor value a little.
By using these simple steps and parts we already have, we can build working flashing beacon light, but just adjust resistor and capacitor value until timing and blinking work how one needs.
How to Build:
To build a Simple Flashing Beacon Light Circuit follow the below mentioned simple steps for connections:
Get Parts Ready:
- First, take all needed parts and check if they work good.
Fix IC with Heat Sink:
- Next, put LM317 regulator IC on aluminum heat sink and use heat paste so heat go out better.
Build Circuit:
- Put all parts on breadboard or PCB same like in diagram and here resistor and capacitor values decide how fast bulb will blink.
Add Power Supply:
- Now give 12 to 15V DC power (1 amp) to input pin of LM317 and be careful with plus and minus (polarity).
Test the Circuit:
- Then turn ON power and see if bulb blink and if blinking is not correct change resistor or capacitor to fix time.
Hold Parts in Place:
- After that, if circuit work good fix all parts tight on board so they do not move.
Put in Box (Optional):
Final Test:
- Also, check again to be sure flashing beacon work good and regular.
Note:
- Follow all steps careful and be safe when using electricity and solder tools; this way one can construct its own flashing beacon with LM317 and simple parts.
Conclusion:
Overall, many places use the Simple Flashing Beacon Light Circuit, like emergency cars, warning signs, road help and also decoration.
Furthermore, it give strong blinking light that people can see easily even from far away, as it catch eye fast and show signal clear.
